About Me

I design and install custom furniture and create tailor-made fine art and sculpture pieces for residential and commercial clients. I am passionate about using environmentally sustainable materials (wood, metal, glass, textiles, ceramics, paint, plaster…and everything in between) and building methods. I work with homeowners, interior designers, curators, and contractors.

As a teenager in Dallas, TX, I assisted my uncle in remodeling old homes and realized I loved working with my hands. My interest in design took root during my undergraduate studies at the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas (1991) and further developed while completing my Master of Fine Arts degree at Parsons School of Design: The New School (1997).  After graduating from Parsons, I created my company, Henry Levine Design, and became a founding partner for Bright Enterprises, a full-service, licensed general contracting company.

While living in NYC, I fabricated projects for the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, Jewish Museum, MoMA PS1, National Academy Museum, Threadwaxing Space, Ace Gallery, and Fatto a Mano that required carpentry, mount-making, painting, and installation skills.

After moving back to Austin, Texas, in 2002, I continued to work on freelance projects and joined Humanities Texas (the Texas affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities) as their Exhibitions & Facilities Specialist. In this role, I designed, fabricated, repaired, and shipped nationally traveling exhibitions and maintained the institution’s renovated historic headquarters. I was a Selectee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 for Design Within Reach’s M+D+F competition for Texas designers and winner of “Best in Show” in 2010.

I returned to my own business full-time in 2022. Since then, I’ve produced handmade, award-winning custom furniture design, furniture fabrication, fine art fabrication services, sculpture fabrication services, and beyond.  I use traditional wood-shop techniques but often incorporate CNC fabrication, laser-cutting, mold-making (plaster and silicone), soldering, welding, and finishes ranging from traditional French polish to conversion varnish and powder-coating. See some of my current projects in the Gallery.

Many artists and designers have impacted me, including Martin Puryear, Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt, Wendell Castle, Kem Weber, Charles and Ray Eames, Phillip Guston, Alice Neel, John Currin, Robert Ryman, Vija Celmins, Chris Burden and Ed Ruscha.
